(Video) Do I Need Talent to Learn How to Sing?

How do you tell someone they…suck?

Honest to God, I get this question way more times than I care to admit. It’s a funny way of asking whether or not talent actually matters.

Ah yes. The age old debate. Talent vs. Training.

This is a tricky thing for me to write about because — if I’m being perfectly honest — I was always the “talented” one growing up. But that’s largely because I was trained early. My parents are both musicians so learning to read music is extremely fuzzy for me. My mom had me naming the pitches I was hearing by the age of 5. I grew my musical ear at such an accelerated rate, the debate very much applies to me as well.

If you’re an adult reading this and didn’t have the privilege (or insanity, depending on how you look at it 😆) of musician parents, you probably think that you’re too old to learn. You missed your shot. You shoulda taken the dang piano lessons like mom wanted.

Here’s the good news — you’re wrong! Straight up.

Most people have associated singing as an "it" thing - something that some people just have, and others don't.

Kinda like athleticism. (One could argue...well actually, no one would argue that I definitely do not have that.)

On the other hand, one could also say that everything is learnable. Just like I had to learn how to play volleyball in high school, despite convincing myself I didn't have what it takes, singing is something that can be taught.

So the question still stands: Do you need talent to learn how to sing?

YOU’LL LEARN:

  • the truth about talent

  • why singing feels so hard

  • why focusing on sounding good isn’t where to start

  • the number 1 thing to focus on

Don’t let an excuse prevent you from trying, or you’ll never experience the magic on the other side of your fear!
