There’s a reason we love watching people make things up on the spot — comedic improv, jam bands, jazz improvisation all have an undeniable magic about them.

Most people will say that ‘they’re just brave,’ or ‘they’ve got that talent.’ But the truth is — making things up on the spot can have a structure to it.

When I ask my voice students to 'make something up’ at an opportune time in the music, most of them look at me like I have four heads.

‘Me? Make something…up?!’ they’ll ask with wide eyes.

I started incorporating ‘melody messarounds’ as a fun way to practice this. Beginning with a very simple melody (as in…one note!), this step by step process alleviates the “what do I do?” question that often paralyzes the process.

Melody Messarounds are also great for:

  • Songwriting

  • Improvising

  • Ear training practice

  • Singing for 5 minutes (& feeling great afterward!)

For this video, you’ll need:

  • Less than 10 minutes for “creative time”

  • A comfortable space to sing

  • An open mind & willingness to try!
